PDF Signatures Explained: Drawn Signatures vs Digital Signatures

A signature that looks handwritten on a PDF is not automatically a cryptographic digital signature. The two can look similar while providing very different evidence.

Visible signatures are page content

A typed name, scanned signature image or freehand drawing can be placed on a page like any other annotation or image. It communicates intent visually, but the PDF itself does not automatically gain cryptographic proof of who signed it or whether the document changed afterward.

Cryptographic PDF signatures are different

A digital signature uses public-key cryptography and a certificate to bind a signature to a particular byte range of the PDF. A validating viewer can check whether the signed bytes have changed and whether it trusts the certificate chain. That verification is fundamentally different from recognising a picture of someone's handwriting.

What happens when a signed PDF is edited?

It depends on how the file was signed and what changes are permitted. Some PDF signatures support specific later changes, while other modifications will make a viewer report that the document was altered after signing. Even an innocent edit can therefore change the verification status.

NoblePDF scope: the editor can create and place typed or hand-drawn signature artwork. NoblePDF does not present that feature as a certificate-backed cryptographic digital-signature service.

Why this distinction matters

Electronic signature is a broader concept

“Electronic signature” can describe many methods for indicating agreement electronically. A PDF digital signature is one technical implementation. A drawn signature in a browser is another kind of electronic action, but it should not be described as cryptographically equivalent.

What a digital signature actually validates

A cryptographic PDF signature normally covers a defined byte range of the file and records certificate information that a capable viewer can validate. A viewer may report whether the signed byte range has changed since signing, whether the certificate chains to a trusted issuer, and whether the certificate was valid at the relevant time. Those checks are separate from the visual appearance of the signature box.

A green check mark in one viewer is not a universal legal conclusion. Trust stores differ, certificates expire, revocation information can be unavailable, and regulated workflows may require a specific identity provider or signing platform. For high-stakes documents, verify the signature in the software and process required by the receiving organisation.

Edits can invalidate cryptographic evidence

Even a harmless-looking edit can change bytes covered by a signature. Adding a page, flattening a form, changing metadata, rotating content or saving through another PDF library may cause a viewer to report that the document changed after signing. If you must edit a digitally signed PDF, preserve the signed original and treat the edited copy as a separate document unless your workflow explicitly supports permitted post-signing changes.

This is also why NoblePDF does not present its visual signature tool as a digital-signature service. It can place a visible mark, but it does not issue identity certificates, create a trusted cryptographic signing chain or validate legal identity.

A sensible workflow for important documents

  1. Finish document editing before the final signature stage when possible.
  2. If a certificate-backed signature is required, use a signing solution designed for that purpose.
  3. After signing, verify the signature in a compatible PDF viewer.
  4. Avoid unnecessary edits after cryptographic signing.
  5. Keep the unsigned source and the final signed copy as separate files.

What NoblePDF's signature tool is good for

It is useful when you need to place a visual signature mark into a PDF as part of a normal document workflow. The local-first editor can keep that work on your device. For regulated signing, identity verification, certificate validation or formal signature workflows, use a service that specifically provides those capabilities.
